Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management-Kerala (IIITM-K) is a non-profit making autonomous institution registered under Section 8 (old Section 25) Companies Act 2013 and the management of the Institute is vested with Board of Directors comprising eminent industrialists, academicians and senior Government officials appointed by the Government of Kerala.

Information Technology is an important tool for development of different areas of knowledge economy. India is emerging as a global player in the field of Information Technology. There has been a steady rise of software and IT sector in India since 1990’s. As the IT industry is expanding rapidly, manpower requirement is growing exponentially. In order to develop manpower for different areas of the knowledge economy, education and training of information technology is a core prerequisite. The MHRD department of Central Government has decided to start IIITs in different states.

Government of Kerala is always in the forefront for providing quality education and has excelled in the sphere of literacy and has been a guiding example and inspiration for the other states in India. Realizing the growth of IT sector and the need for highly trained manpower within the state, the state has taken positive steps towards establishing leadership in the fast growing Information Technology field, a high-power committee consisting of leading figures of Industry, Academia and Government was constituted by the Government of Kerala, to initiate steps towards establishing a premier institute of Information Technology and Management. Based on the deliberations of the committee, the Government of Kerala decided to set up the Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management-Kerala (IIITM-K).

The Honorable Governor of Kerala, Sri Sukhdev Singh Kang, formally inaugurated the institute on November 23, 2000 and the foundation stone laid by Shri. A P J Abdul Kalam. . The Government of Kerala has constituted a Board of Directors chaired by Shri K. P. P. Nambiar and invited Prof. K R Srivathsan, who was the Head of the Electrical Engineering Department at the Indian Institute of Technology-Kanpur (IIT-K) as its founding Director.

The first batch of students was admitted in the month of March 2001 for the coveted Postgraduate Diploma in Information Technology (PGDIT) of 18 months duration. The convocation of the first batch of students was held on April 7,2003. Shri F C Kohli, a father figure for the IT industry in India, awarded the degrees to this pioneer batch of students. The leading Indian software giant, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) is the creation of Sri Kohli who built the company virtually from scratch way back in 1960s when software was even not heard of.

The first batch PGDIT students were enthusiastically received by the software industries and almost all of them got excellent placements in reputed IT companies. 9 batches were passed out from the institute with flying colours and almost all of them well placed in top IT firms and other organizations.


Amidst the enthralling verdant green and sylvan surroundings of the Technopark Campus, the Institute enjoys the best possible natural and hi-tech ambience available anywhere. Thiruvananthapuram, at the southern tip of peninsular India has an equatorial climate (at 8º latitude) with dense green tree cover. National Geographic has identified this area among the top 50 most beautiful spots in the world. This region is one of the most sought after tourist spots. Technopark is the first Electronics Technology Park of its kind initiated with 100% Government equity, is home to 200 IT and ITES companies including 40 start up companies in the Incubation Centres, employing about 30000 plus IT professionals. The campus is spread over 285.64 acres of inspiring lush greenery and offering 2.1 million s.f.t. of built up space. Technopark includes big names of IT & ITES majors viz Infosys, TCS, US Technology, IBS Software Services, McKinsey, Allianz Cornhill, Ernst & Young, Tata Elxsi, RM ESI, InAPP, NeST, Sherston Educational Software, Alamy, Seaview Support Systems, Geosoft Technologies, Office Tiger, Torroid India Ltd., M Squared, Gemini Software etc. Technopark is a rare confluence of the best of IT infrastructure and inspiring and innovative environs

In accordance with a conscious decision taken, the Institution has been functioning from the Technopark campus, which affords enviable facilities for an IT Institution and also allows the Institute to work closely with the industry. IIITMK initially was provided with 13000 s.f.t. built up area in the Technopark campus where IIITM-K has established its own full-fledged advanced IT Infrastructure. By strategically locating IIITM-K in the midst of world IT majors, students at IIIITM-K gets opportunities for closer interactions with Industry experts who are invited as faculty as also as Guest speakers. CEOs of Technopark Companies, Eminent Scientists and academicians frequently visit IIITM-K and interact with students.

IIITM-K has moved to its own building in the Technopark Campus. The new building measuring 33000 s.f.t. built at a cost of Rs 540.0 lakhs offers spacious class rooms and laboratories. The Institute has obtained from Government of Kerala an additional 10 acres of land in Technocity to create a full fledged campus for the Institute. Experienced professionals from the Technopark companies academicians are inducted as Adjunct Faculty and help impart practical knowledge to our students. The Technopark companies provide our students to work on exciting projects during their internships and also offer our excellent job and career opportunities. Located as we are in Technopark which has the distinction of not losing a single working day so far we also enjoy the same privilege and are able to adhere to a pre-announced academic calendar.
