Background

Over the last few years, India has witnessed a significant growth in its communication and information technology industry in general and the software development industry in particular. The software industry has been identified as one of the main contributors to the Indian economy in the coming decades. With several IT projects being initiated, there is a need for developing skilled manpower in software engineering and software project management in order to implement projects successfully both in the government and the private industries. There is also need to adopt state of the art emerging processes, practices and technologies in the area. The Centre of Excellence in Software Engineering and Software Project Management is expected to play an important role in education and research in this area so that quality manpower developed for the industries by training fresh graduates, working professionals and by providing technical consultancy services The Centre is expected to play a leading role in assisting government departments, e-governance initiatives and software industries in Kerala to enhance the quality of software delivered and in implementing IT projects successfully.

Goals of the Centre

• To provide technical and managerial knowledge inputs and assist in building capacity in government, public sector organizations and industry in the area of Software Engineering and Project Management.

• To assist professionals in applying sound software engineering and project management practices in implementing developing and implementing Information Technology projects.

• To provide consulting and training services for technical solution design of e-Governance applications for various government agencies and provide support in activities related to software testing, quality assurance, information security and other related areas.

• To assist implementing agencies in adopting innovative approaches through relevant customized training programs

• To bring together researchers and experts from the industry to collaborate in conducting goal oriented research in the related areas and disseminate research results to a wider community through publications.

• To provide programs in training, certification, education, outreach and research in the field to faculty members from technical institutions, students and professionals of the IT industry.

• To create and foster an environment for faculty, students and professionals from the industry for exploring state of the art software engineering methodologies through hands on projects using modern tools and help in creating new knowledge through consulting and research.

Offerings of the centre for e-Governance

e-Governance is the focus area for governments across the country in order to bring benefit of Information Technology to serving the citizens. With the roll out of e-Governance projects, several departments and government agencies are facing multitude of project implementation challenges. Increasing need is being felt for developing skilled manpower in technology development, technology application, software engineering and project management in order to implement e-Governance projects successfully. There is also need to adopt state of the art emerging processes, standards, practices and technologies in the area. The Knowledge Centre for Software Engineering & Project Management at IIITM-K is striving to play an important role in education and research in this area so that knowledge inputs are provided to implementing agencies and other stakeholders by offering training programs, research publications, and technical consultancy or advisory services.
